September 1 Proclaimed Micajah Clark Dyer Day

Article in The North Georgia News, Sept 7, 2016, Page 1C:

"Commissioner Paris said, 'I am very pleased to proclaim September 1, 2016 as Micajah Clark Dyer Day in Union County. September 1, 1874 is the date Mr. Dyer received a patent for his flying machine.'

"Mr. Dyer invented and flew the machine on his farm in Choestoe Community many years before the Wright brothers’ flight at Kitty Hawk, NC.  Union County and the surrounding counties did not have newspapers at that time, but the story of Mr. Dyer’s invention was reported in dozens of newspapers across the U.S., perhaps also in foreign countries since efforts were being made all over the world at the time to build a machine that could fly. Several neighbors witnessed Mr. Dyer’s flights, and knowledge of his invention was spread by word of mouth throughout the county and beyond.
Exhibit at Chamber of Commerce
"For the entire month of Septem- ber, the Blairsville Chamber of Commerce has an exhibit in their lobby showcasing Mr. Dyer’s invention.

"Chamber member Micajah Clark Dyer Foundation welcomes everyone to come by and see the exhibit and pick up a brochure that has a brief story about Mr. Dyer. It includes the credit he has received to date, plans for future efforts to acquaint the public about this wonderful piece of Union County history, and efforts that will continue into the future to keep the legacy of our pioneer aviator alive.

"You can also learn about the story at www.micajahclarkdyer.org."

More 1875 Flying Machine News Reports

Typical front page of an 1875 newspaper
It is always exciting to find newspapers from the 1800s that published articles about Micajah Clark Dyer's flying machine. In our post below dated August 3, 2012, we told about the five 1875 articles newly found by Jim Powell, which brought to 18 the number of different newspapers we had found up to that time.
Now we can add five more to the number.  Here are the additional ones just found:

The Eureka Herald and Greenwood County Republican
Eureka, Kansas
Thursday, July 22, 1875 - page 3
A Ship with Wings and Paddle Wheels
"Mr. Micajah Dyer of Union County, Blairsville, Ga., recently obtained a patent for an apparatus for navigating the air..."

The Junction City Weekly Union
Junction City, Kansas
Saturday, July 17, 1875 - page 4
A Ship with Wings and Paddle Wheels

The Advertiser-Courier
Hermana, Missouri
Saturday, July 17, 1875 - page 3
A Ship with Wings and Paddle Wheels

The Recorder-Tribune
Holton, Kansas
Thursday, July 22, 1875 - page 3
A Ship with Wings and Paddle Wheels

The Sedalia Democrat
Sedalia, Missouri
Saturday, July 17, 1875 - page 1
(story reported on front page without a title)

There were no newspapers in Union County or its adjoining counties in 1874 when Clark Dyer was granted a patent for his flying machine, but it obviously was big news across the United States. It is very likely that there were more newspapers than the 23 we have located that reported the story.  In fact, we speculate that the story was reported in Europe and Australia, as well, because attempts were being made all over the world at that time to design a machine that would fly.

Spreading the Word about Georgia's Pioneer Aviator

We wanted to share with you some of the places where, during the past 12 months, the story of Micajah Clark Dyer's invention and life’s work was introduced to the public by way of exhibits and presentations. Many more people learned about this remarkable pioneer aviator throughout the year.

Summer Enrichment Program at Union County Middle School
ICL - YHC Class Field Trip to Flight Site
Historical Marker Placed at Flight Site
Airport Awareness Day at Blairsville Airport
Permanent Exhibit at Union County Public Library

If you are a newcomer to this site, you may wish to scroll down to the earlier posts and discover how the story of Dyer's amazing invention was almost lost before some documents were found that revealed just how impressive his work really is.

Clark Dyer's craft design is primitive in light of the advancements made throughout the quarter of a century that followed, but in 1874 it represented the beginning of the transition from dirigibles to powered, heavier-than-air craft.

Dr. Tom D. Crouch, the long-time Senior Curator of Aeronautics at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., said that while it may sound farfetched, it would be a mistake to dismiss the notion that Clark Dyer got the machine airborne. He said, "People like Dyer are absolutely fascinating because they simply incorporated principles that they knew worked, like paddle wheels."

Mr. Donald Grant Kelly, a patent attorney with Intellectual Asset Management Associates, LLC, in Washington, D.C., who has had many years of experience interacting with the U.S. Patent Office, including a number of years as an employee there, was greatly intrigued upon learning of Dyer's invention at this early date. Regarding the scoffers who say the machine wouldn't fly, Mr. Kelly said:

"To grant a patent, the Patent Office must determine that an invention is new and not a mere obvious change. Beyond that, it must be clearly apparent that the invention works as described and is useful in its application. So, we can be confident that the Patent Office staff saw to it that Mr. Dyer's application for a patent for 'Improvement in Apparatus for Navigating the Air' was valid, workable, and new—worthy of being sewn into the rapidly expanding quilt of aviation knowledge."

Please let us know if you have groups that would like to have the Micajah Clark Dyer story presented at their meetings.  Also, we continue to seek someone to build additional models of the airplane to be placed in local libraries, schools, museums, etc.  A large project that we want to see begin is the building of a full-size replica of the plane.  We plan to continue our efforts to get him inducted into the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame, and to gain recognition for him in other ways, such as issuance of a U.S. Postage memorial stamp, an exhibit at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, naming an airport for him, and getting the story included in the history books.

Solar Impulse 2 to fly around the world

Another "first" in flight, a solar-powered airplane!

View image on Twitter

The Verge reports:
The Swiss-engineered airplane Solar Impulse 2 will begin its solar-powered flight around the world on Monday. If weather permits, the plane will launch from Abu Dhabi early in the morning. The plane was scheduled to launch earlier this month, but was delayed due to weather conditions.
The flight should take around five months to complete, and the 21,748-mile journey has been divided into 12 manageable trips. The team behind the Solar Impulse 2, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, will share piloting duties during the 500-hour flight. The single-cabin airplane has a 236-foot wingspan covered in 17,248 solar cells that power four electric motors. Because its wing cells store energy from the Sun, the Solar Impulse 2 can fly at night as well as during the day.
Piccard and Borschberg have been a part of the Solar Impluse team for years now (Piccard is the president of Solar Impulse, and Borschberg is the co-founder and CEO). Together, they hold eight world records for flight, including the first solar-powered flight across the US in the original Solar Impulse.
After taking off in Abu Dhabi, the Solar Impulse 2 will make stops in Oman, India, Myanmar, China, the US, and Southern Europe or Northern Africa before landing back in Abu Dhabi sometime in July. You can track the plane's progress here.

To-Scale Model of Clark Dyer's Flying Machine

The Model of Clark Dyer's "Apparatus for Navigating the Air" is now on display at the Union County Historical Society's Museum in the Old Courthouse on the Square in Blairsville. The model was built to scale by Jack Allen of Blairsville using the 1874 U.S. Patent drawings and descriptions. The display case has a mirrored floor which enables a view of the open bottom of the craft and its internal working parts. The hinged wings are left uncovered to show how they function.

Many thanks to Jack Allen for his time and skill in building this model of Micajah Clark Dyer's flying machine. It will be enjoyed for years to come and will acquaint the public with the genius of Georgia's Pioneer Aviator who was able to envision, build and fly an aircraft with steering capability far ahead of other airplane inventors.

Model of Dyer’s 1874 Airplane Displayed at Reunion

Model of Clark Dyer's Airplane                           Photo by Billy J. Turnage

The rain didn’t come until after the 200-plus attendees at the Dyer-Souther Reunion had finished a sumptuous meal on Saturday, July 20, 2013. It had stopped by the time the featured guest, Jack Allen, concluded his remarks about the model he built of Micajah Clark Dyer’s 1874 flying machine and the model was presented to Mr. Ed Reed, Vice President and Past President of the Union County Historical Society, to be placed on display in the Old Courthouse Museum in Blairsville, Ga. The replica was on exhibit throughout the reunion, giving the public its first look at the remarkable work of Mr. Allen.
This year, as well as in the past several years, the reunion was held at the Choestoe Baptist Church Family Life Center located on the Micajah Clark Dyer Parkway (State Hwy. 180), Blairsville, Ga. This is a fitting site for the reunion since the Dyer and Souther forebears first settled in this valley shortly after Union County was formed in 1832 from a portion of the Cherokee Nation. Some other family names that appear on the earliest records of the Choestoe Church are Nix, Hunter, Collins and others who were related by marriage or had other family ties.
When the Scots-Irish settlers first moved into the area, there were five Indian trails that converged at this location: the Logan, Choestoe, Tesnatee, Trackrock and Enotah Trails. The intersection of these traffic lanes had already made the area into a thriving community. The new arrivals kept the same name the Indians had given the village, “Choestoe” which translates “the place where rabbits dance.”
One of the youngsters who arrived with the first white settlers was 11-year-old Micajah Clark Dyer. Those who saw his many inventions throughout his life, the most remarkable of which was the flying machine, labeled him “a genius.” After his death in 1891, his patent and airplane were sold, and the family had only stories handed down orally about his invention for more than a century. There were no cameras or newspapers available in the mountain counties during Clark Dyer’s lifetime, and searches conducted by Ken Akins and Robert Davis in 1980 failed to produce any documentation about the airplane.
Then, in 2004, Steven and Joey Dyer, great-great-great grandsons of Clark Dyer, located the patent for the airplane in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. The patent office had loaded old patent files onto the Internet, which included Patent No. 154,654 issued on Sept. 1, 1874, to Micajah Dyer of Blairsville, Ga. for an “Apparatus for Navigating the Air.”  Later, more than a dozen 1875 newspapers published in towns outside the mountain area were discovered with articles about Clark Dyer’s invention.
In recent years, the family has made efforts to gain recognition for the inventor. They make the case that this is not just for family heritage, but because it is an important historical event for the state, indeed for the nation, since no one preceded Clark Dyer in inventing a flying machine that was capable of controlled flight.
Jack Allen with his model
Model builder, Jack Allen of Blairsville, is a retired Delta Airlines mechanic. He has been building models since before his retirement from Delta. One of the best known of his models is a replica of the Telstar 1 Communications Satellite that hangs in the lobby of the BellSouth Tower in Atlanta. His model of that satellite is displayed in the Georgia Rural Telephone Museum in Leslie, Ga.
Jack crafted every piece of Clark Dyer’s airplane model to scale, working from the 1874 patent drawings and descriptions, which were silent as to dimensions, leaving Jack with the challenge of using coordinates to calculate the size of the many parts.

Display with mirror showing bottom of plane

Family members agree that, truly, Jack has pro- duced a remarkable replica of the 19th century aircraft and proved himself to be worthy of the title “Master Builder.”

Story of Clark Dyer's Flying Machine included in Northeast Georgia Guidebook and CD

Cover painting by John Kollock
"Sautee Valley Spring" (1993)

The secrets and history of eight northeast Georgia
counties has been captured in a just released book and recording entitled Experience Northeast Georgia. The work was sponsored by the Habersham Electric Membership Corporation to celebrate its 75 years of service to this area. The stories were written and produced by Emory Jones, LLC, of White County and are narrated by the well-known artist and historian John Kollock of Habersham County.
Of course, no history of this area would be complete without including the story of Clark Dyer's flying machine. It is recounted in the "Choestoe" portion (No. 31) of the book and recorded on the CD in a very delightful fashion.
There are a total of 75 stories about people and places of historical significance across the eight counties. The book and CDs are available for purchase at the Byron Herbert Reese Farm and the Union County Historical Society in Union County and other retailers as listed at www.seenortheastgeorgia.com.
